Romania

From the depths of confusion, abandonment, poverty and corruption, I witnessed close nit communities that would place others to shame. An air of determination resonated in every pocket of the suburbs that I found myself drawn too.

The largest Country in Southeastern Europe bordered by the Ukraine, Republic of Moldova, The Danube, Bulgaria, Serbia and Hungary. Almost entirely ruined by war and socialism Romania is populated with a mix of cultures such as Romanian's, Hungarians, Saxons, tiny pockets of Lipovani ( Russian speaking people ) Serb speaking villages & Jews. The majority of the population is Romanian Orthodox practicing along side Catholic and Protestant Religions.

In the following images you are invited to view a slither of everyday life off the beaten track from the Capital City Bucharest through the villages of Rasnov, Sighisoara ( Sibiu ) and Brasov in the Transylvanian Alps. This is an intended journey filled with ordinary people from Shepherds to Gypsies, Young and Old and even Grafters to Socializers going about their daily tasks.

These images are an intended celebration of colour, movement and human nature concentrating on the reality of everyday life unposed in the hope to demystify foreign cultures. An exploration into the unknown revealing an unconventional visual beauty often overlooked. Simply put by Ralph Waldo Emerson , " Beauty is its own excuse for being".

A photograph can make us understand, react and empathize with the wider world by humanizing and honoring the unknown.

"What was any art but a mould in which to imprison for a moment. The shining elusive element which is Life Itself - Life hurrying past us and running away. Too strong to stop, too sweet to lose".

Willa Cather.
